RUSH FOR BERLIN is a tactical real time strategy game, set on the European battlefields of World War II, during 1944-45. The player’s goal; to capture the German capital, as either the British/US/French alliance or the Red army of the Soviet Union. The act symbolizes the total defeat of the Third Reich and means the end of the war on the European continent. Players face more and more challenges, as they get closer to the capital. The game is based on historical facts and gives wide possibilities for changing history and playing an alternative reality.
Through a series of missions, a full story will be revealed concentrating on the rush towards Berlin, a completely different one with the Soviets, with Anglo-American allies and with the Germans.
RfB consists of three different campaigns (plus bonus French missions). Each represents a new level of difficulty and a different level of fidelity to history. The Soviet and Western Allied campaigns are available at the beginning and the German one is unlocked after these have been finished successfully. This is how the game gets harder and starts to turn farther from the well-known facts of history. The French campaign is a special one: it can be unlocked mission by mission by finishing other campaigns successfully. The “Rush” feeling is truly behind every mission of the game, because not only the objectives must be completed, but also the time needed for them is counted as a measure of performance. During the briefings we can catch the feeling of getting closer and closer to the Third Reich’s capital Berlin, and we are able to follow the performance of our counterpart within the alliance in this race. The frontlines can be checked and the performance in the previous missions defines the time limit in the next one. In case of better performance it is possible to gain advantage, but in case of failure there is a chance to get into drawback as well. 26 exciting missions (including one tutorial) presents one of the greatest competitions between allied forces during wartime in history.
The Soviets have vast human resources at their disposal and a huge, well-organized workforce to satisfy the Red Army`s ever-growing hunger for equipment. The inherent patriotism and burning hatred of invaders provided the ordinary Soviet soldier with a virtually endless supply of morale – hence his legendary persistence and natural disregard of extreme conditions and unfavorable odds.
The Western Allies face a more complex and serious challenge on their way to the German capital. Once militarized, US economy had easily kept its overseas armies well-fed and well-supplied, but significant losses of manpower were unacceptable to the public and threatened with severe political ramifications. The situation called for a doctrine different from those employed by the Soviets or the Germans; a doctrine which, by the end of 1944, practically resulted in a war of attrition.
Following the successful completion of both the Soviet and the Western Allies campaigns, an alternate German campaign will become available. Hitler will be removed from power by the equivalent of the July coup of 1944 and the player will be given control of a nation fighting for survival against the simultaneous onslaught of two numerically superior enemies. The campaign starts with Soviet and Western Allied forces crossing the borders of Germany on both sides. The player`s task is to contain both offensives with whatever means available to him – a growing number of Me-262 jet fighters included.
The bonus campaign of RFB deals with an important, gamewise oft-overlooked aspect of World War 2 - the French Resistance and its struggle to restore national pride by liberating France and vanquishing her enemies. Aided by a colorful cast of British specialists and international volunteers, the maquisards (civil resistance fighters) participated in a wide variety of combat engagements ranging from sabotage to heavy skirmish. They played a pivotal role in the success of Allied landings in France and took their part from the liberation of its capital, Paris.
